Brandon Phillips bounced a bizarre double over first base to snap a ninth-inning tie, and the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the struggling New York Mets with a 7-4 victory Wednesday.
Joey Votto homered and Zack Cozart had a career-high four hits, all off Matt Harvey, in a game that featured a little bit of everything - including a testy exchange in the dugout between Cincinnati starter Mat Latos and teammate Jay Bruce.
Still, the Reds regrouped and won for the 10th time in 12 games. They finished a 7-2 trip against the bottom three teams in the NL East, moving a season-best 11 games over .500 at 29-18.
Harvey appeared headed for his first defeat of the season before the Mets rallied in the seventh. But they fell to 2-11 in their last 13 home games.
Daniel Murphy had three hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot for New York. Rick Ankiel added three extra-base hits and drove in two runs, including a tying triple with two outs in the seventh.

Extensions are all the rage in today's MLB. Young players and veterans alike are signing or mulling new contracts that would keep them with their current clubs for years to come. Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo doesn't appear to have gotten caught up in this fad, as he told Tyler Kepner of The New York Times that all he's thinking about at this point is the next pitch.
“A lot of people ask me: ‘Do you want to stay in Cincinnati?
What do you want?’ ” Choo said. “That’s too far away. We’re not at the end
of the season; we’re not at the end of the first half yet. I know why I’m here.
Cincinnati gave up two good players, and they want to win a World Series.

Johnny Cueto came off the disabled list and started for the Reds last night. He had been on the disabled list due to a sore right oblique; it was the same injury he experienced during last season’s playoffs. His unique twisting windup seems to be the reason that he’s suffered the same ailment twice now, and he has said he might consider changing his delivery to correct the problem in the future.
When Cueto pitches, he twists his mid section and turns his back to the hitter to increase deception. Here is a look at his complete windup.
The heavy twisting motion is fairly rare in the majors, as only a few pitchers have utilized this motion over the years. Luis Tyant (video). Hideo Nomo (video). Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was given the honor of National League Player of the Week on Monday, covering games from the week of May 13 through May 19.
Over the course of the past week, Votto boasted a major league best batting average of .583, while leading the NL with a .655 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage that was good enough for second in the NL.
Votto would also slug two home runs and drive in five runs, collecting 14 hits that were included in five multi-hit games.
The highlight of Votto’s week was in a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, in which he reached base safely in each of his six plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
Votto extended his hitting streak to nine games on Monday night in a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets and is amongst the NL leaders in hitting with a .353 batting average, while slugging 6 home runs with 20 RBI.
