In brief: smoldering Reds to host Cubbies

Last game The Reds completed a 3-game sweep of the Mets yesterday, winning 7-4. Mat Latos pitched for the Reds. He put in 6.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (earned) on 8 hits and a walk. In the seventh, when the Mets scored their third and fourth runs, the Reds only had 4 runs of their own, so it was looking a little dicey, but these guys battled back and tacked on 3 more in the top of the ninth. Normally, Brandon Phillips’ 2-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI would be a pretty impressive night, but Joey Votto went 2-for-3 with 2 walks and a home run and 2 RBI. Zack Cozart went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI. This team can really turn it on sometimes. Next game The Cubs? Again?? Yes, it’s another three games with the Cubs in Cincinnati, starting tonight. Bronson Arroyo (RHP 4-4, 3.28 ERA) will take on Scott Feldman (RHP, 4-3, 2.19 ERA). First pitch at 7:10 p.m. The first geo-targeted email I’ve ever gotten from the Reds I have complained that MLB doesn’t do a very good job in segmenting it’s marketing em...

Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team rocks postgame interviews

College baseball teams sure seem to have fun, and the Cincinnati Bearcats are a good example. UC finished the regular season 24-32 and placed ninth in the Big East with a 6-18 mark, failing to qualify for the conference tournament. ... But that didn't deter the Bearcats from having a jolly good time. There was jousting. There was addressing of royalty. There was swimming. The backstroke, too. There was exploring. And to top it off, there was a capture. By the way, the UC Bearcats play their home games at Marge Schott Stadium. ... We wonder if the Cincinnati Reds late owner would approve.

Cincinnati Reds Sign RHP Trevor Bell To Minor League Deal

Free agent right-handed pitcher Trevor Bell and the Cincinnati Reds have come to terms on a minor league contract that will see him pitch for their Triple-A Louisville farm club. He was roughed up brutally in 2012 so there is no guarantee of anything other than providing organizational depth at the minor league level with this signing. Reds’ Sean Marshall unavailable with shoulder discomfort

Cincinnati Reds left-handed reliever Sean Marshall wasn't available last night against the New York Mets after he experienced discomfort in his throwing shoulder, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. The Reds ran into a situation where Marshall would have usually been called upon, as the team's right-handed starter, Mat Latos, reached 100 pitches and was set to face left-handed batter Daniel Murphy. After surrendering a RBI single to Murphy, Latos then allowed the tying run to score on a hit from another lefty, Rick Ankiel. Following the game, manager Dusty Baker told reporters that he would have generally used Marshall in that situation. However, the left-hander wasn't available after his arm didn't respond well to pregame throwing. For his part, Marshall believes he's dealing with inflammation. "We were kind of erring on the side of caution. I told them I was a little bit sore," Marshall said after the Reds' 7-4 win. "I did a...

Reds 7, Mets 4

Brandon Phillips bounced a bizarre double over first base to snap a ninth-inning tie, and the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the struggling New York Mets with a 7-4 victory Wednesday. Joey Votto homered and Zack Cozart had a career-high four hits, all off Matt Harvey, in a game that featured a little bit of everything - including a testy exchange in the dugout between Cincinnati starter Mat Latos and teammate Jay Bruce. Still, the Reds regrouped and won for the 10th time in 12 games. They finished a 7-2 trip against the bottom three teams in the NL East, moving a season-best 11 games over .500 at 29-18. Harvey appeared headed for his first defeat of the season before the Mets rallied in the seventh. But they fell to 2-11 in their last 13 home games. Daniel Murphy had three hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot for New York. Rick Ankiel added three extra-base hits and drove in two runs, including a tying triple with two outs in the seventh. With the score tied at 4 in the ninth, Shin-Soo

Reds rumors: Shin-Soo Choo not considering extension

Extensions are all the rage in today's MLB. Young players and veterans alike are signing or mulling new contracts that would keep them with their current clubs for years to come. Cincinnati Reds outfielder Shin-Soo Choo doesn't appear to have gotten caught up in this fad, as he told Tyler Kepner of The New York Times that all he's thinking about at this point is the next pitch. “A lot of people ask me: ‘Do you want to stay in Cincinnati? What do you want?’ ” Choo said. “That’s too far away. We’re not at the end of the season; we’re not at the end of the first half yet. I know why I’m here. Cincinnati gave up two good players, and they want to win a World Series. That’s what I want, too. I’ve never played in the playoffs. I have a good opportunity to play with a good team.” Choo was acquired by the Reds over the offseason from the Arizona Cleveland Indians in the three-team trade that also involved Trevor Bauer, Didi Gregorius, and Drew Stubbs. Johnny Cueto’s Twist

Johnny Cueto came off the disabled list and started for the Reds last night. He had been on the disabled list due to a sore right oblique; it was the same injury he experienced during last season’s playoffs. His unique twisting windup seems to be the reason that he’s suffered the same ailment twice now, and he has said he might consider changing his delivery to correct the problem in the future. When Cueto pitches, he twists his mid section and turns his back to the hitter to increase deception. Here is a look at his complete windup. The heavy twisting motion is fairly rare in the majors, as only a few pitchers have utilized this motion over the years. Luis Tyant (video). Hideo Nomo (video). Felix Hernandez did it somewhat for a couple of years (video, 42 sec mark), though not to the extent Cueto does, and doesn’t twist as dramatically anymore. While the full body twist is not the most common pitching motion, it has shown to be fairly effective for the pitchers while they were usi...

Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman Honorary FatMan of the Day

For many being an honorary fat man may not mean much (or anything good), but here at FatManWriting I think it comes as no surprise that we tend to give some respect and love to those of larger girth. Now girth--or fatness--can be a metaphorical as well as physical thing. Sometimes a person can have the heart of a FatMan while not actually being large enough that you have skinny people forced to orbit you due to your gravitational pull. Like Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. So why is Aroldis the honorary FatMan of the Day? Well, it's a great little story... On Sunday when the Reds were playing the Phillies they had a 2-1 heading into the 9th inning. Time for Aroldis Chapman to earn his paycheck and close this one out! Instead he gives up two solo home runs and the Reds lose 3-2. Now what's important is the supposed reason why he gave a pair of dingers and blew the save. According to Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo its because he was full after e

Video: Mat Latos fields questions from fans on MLB Network

Your browser does not support iframes. As much as fans love watching their favorite players perform on the diamond, they love it even more when they can actually hear from them. Well, this is precisely what fans got to do with Mat Latos recently, as the big right-hander appeared on MLB Network's "Chatting Cage" to field questions from fans. Latos addresses how he approaches hitters at Great American Ball Park, who he thinks the funniest guy on the team is, how he adjusted to being the team's ace in Johnny Cueto's absence, and more. Check it out. It's bascially a really good extended interview.

Joey Votto Powers His Way to NL Player of the Week

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto was given the honor of National League Player of the Week on Monday, covering games from the week of May 13 through May 19. Over the course of the past week, Votto boasted a major league best batting average of .583, while leading the NL with a .655 on-base percentage and a .917 slugging percentage that was good enough for second in the NL. Votto would also slug two home runs and drive in five runs, collecting 14 hits that were included in five multi-hit games. The highlight of Votto’s week was in a victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, in which he reached base safely in each of his six plate appearances, going 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Votto extended his hitting streak to nine games on Monday night in a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets and is amongst the NL leaders in hitting with a .353 batting average, while slugging 6 home runs with 20 RBI.

A Little League icon, Todd Frazier will soon rebound and help the Cincinnati Reds

Reds third baseman Todd Frazier continued to struggle mightily in Cincinnati’s 4-3 victory over the Mets in New York on Monday night. Named the preeminent National League rookie by players in 2012, the 27-year-old Frazier went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against New York. Batting a hideous .224 with six homers and 27 RBI, the New Jersey Little League icon has whiffed 44 times in 43 games this spring. Despite Frazier’s failures at the plate, Cincinnati is 27-18 and still seriously contending in the central division. Bruce homers to back Cueto in Reds’ win over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) --Jay Bruce hit a tiebreaking homer and drove in two runs to back Johnny Cueto's wild but effective return from the disabled list, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 4-3 Monday night. Brandon Phillips had a two-run single for his first career hit off Shaun Marcum in 13 at-bats. Phillips also made two sparkling plays in the field to help the Reds bounce back from a stunning 3-2 loss to the Phillies in which closer Aroldis Chapman gave up two home runs. Chapman, the Reds' fifth reliever, struck out two -- one on a 99 mph fastball -- in a perfect ninth for his ninth save. He had blown his two previous save chances. Cueto (2-0) started for the first time since leaving his outing April 13 in the fifth inning with a strained left upper-back muscle. Making his fourth start of the season, the Reds' ace gave up three hits and three runs with eight strikeouts in five innings. But he walked four, including one in the third, when Marlon Byrd touched him for a three-run homer. After t

Reds’ Chapman done in by pastries?

Reds closer Aroldis Chapman threw 12 pitches against the Marlins last Thursday. Ten were 100 miles per hour or higher; the slowest was 98. Chapman threw 14 pitches Sunday in Philadelphia. None registered 100 mph, according to MLB.com game data. And all but four of them were 97 or below. Chapman blew save opportunities in both games. Sunday, he issued a leadoff walk to Delmon Young (who is famous for his impatience at the plate) and allowed consecutive home runs to an unlikely duo - Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis. What could explain the drop in velocity and effectiveness, despite two days of rest? Maybe it was something he ate. Rickie Ricardo, a Spanish-language broadcaster for the Phillies, told Philadelphia's Sportsradio 94WIP that many Cuban players ask him during the season to pick up a popular Cuban pastry from a bakery near his home in Union City, N.J. Chapman - now in his fourth major league season after defecting from Cuba - asked Ricardo for two 50-count boxes after Friday's game, Ricardo s

Reds Closer Aroldis Chapman Eats 18 Pastries Before Game Then Blows Save

Does this count as a quasi bizarre baseball injury, because if so this is a gem. Reds formidable closer Aroldis Chapman blew a save on Sunday vs the Phillies. The Reds entered the 9th inning leading 2-1 until Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis both hit solo homers off Chapman and won 3-2 in walkoff fashion. During the Spanish language broadcast of the game Phillies announcer Rickie Ricardo hinted that Cuban pastries (yes) were to blame for Chapman’s poor outing. “Aroldis Chapman, since he arrived in the U.S. and on a major league team, he has become a friend of mine, and as I do for many Cuban players they always ask me—there is a little Cuban bakery up near where I live in the Cuban strong hold of Union City, New Jersey,” Ricardo told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday. “They cook this little Cuban pastry, which is a flaky-crust pasty with cream cheese and guava and it’s baked, and it’s absolutely delicious. Aroldis Chapman Blew Save Because He Ate 18 Cuban Pastries Before Game, Says Broadcaster

Aroldis Chapman is easily one of the most untouchable closers in baseball. With 242 strikeouts in just 154 innings pitched, the left-hander is a dominant force, having yielded only five home runs during his career. On Sunday, however, Chapman was less than his typical self, and it turns out his sweet tooth may be to blame. According to CBS Philadelphia, Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo (we checked, and, yes, that is his real name) brought Chapman two boxes of 50 of a specific Cuban pastry. The treat is filled with cream cheese and guava, and Ricardo likens adulation of them — which he gets at an ethnic foods store near his home — to Krispy Kreme donuts here in America. However, instead of going ahead with restraint, Chapman immediately downed 18 of them right before the game. Later in the day, Chapman gave up back-to-back home runs Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis, giving the Phillies a 3-2 win over Cincinnati, and prompting Ricardo to make the connection. “When I sa...

In brief: the return of Johnny Cueto

Last game The Reds’ offense was anemic yesterday, but it looked like their 2 runs would be enough until suddenly it wasn’t. Leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth, Jonathan Broxton appeared to get shaken up by a rough defensive play that put a guy on first, and so promptly walked the next batter. Sean Marshall was the one to actually allow the inherited run to score, but even that didn’t seem so bad. After all, it would be Chapman in the ninth. Aroldis Chapman did come in in the ninth, but his recent struggled continued. He walked the first batter and then gave up back-to-back home runs to Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis to blow the save and then the game. Coming into the month of May, Chapman’s ERA was 0.68. 20 days and 6 IP later, it’s 3.32. The 2-3 loss to the Phillies brings the Reds’ record to 26-18. Sounds pretty good, but it’s only good enough to tie with the Pirates for second. Tough division this year. Next game The Reds visit the Mets tonight. Johnny Cueto (RHP, 1-0...

Pastries to blame for Chapman meltdown?

Since becoming the Cincinnati Reds closer in 2012 Aroldis Chapman has been pretty much unhittable. He’s now entering his fourth season and going into yesterdays game against the Phialdelphia Phillies he’d only allowed seven homers over 154 innings pitched. Remarkable stuff which makes yesterdays implosion that much more remarkable. Especially when you consider it was two light hitting Phillies, Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis, went back-to-back. Since then everyone’s wondering what happened to Chapman? Is he hurt? Well apparently he might have just ate too much. One man who might have some insight is Phillies Spanish-language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo, who brought Chapman a gift before the game. “Aroldis Chapman, since he arrived in the U.S. and on a major league team, he has become a friend of mine, and as I do for many Cuban players they always ask me—there is a little Cuban bakery up near where I live in the Cuban strong hold of Union City, New Jersey,” Ricardo told Angelo Cat...

Aroldis Chapman slowed by Cuban guava and cream cheese pastries?

Aroldis Chapman uncharacteristically blew a save against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday by allowing two home runs in the ninth inning. The Cuban fireballer walked Delmon Young to start the inning, was gifted an out when Cliff Lee, who was pinch-running for Young, made a mistake on the bases, and then gave up back-to-back home runs to Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis to lose the game 3-2. Chapman is normally automatic as a closer, so seeing him allow two home runs in the same game was unusual considering he’d only allowed seven in his entire career prior to Sunday. But our friend Spike Eskin at CBS Philly shared a theory about what may have slowed down the Cuban Missile on Sunday. Phillies Spanish language broadcaster Rickie Ricardo told Angelo Cataldi and the 94WIP Morning Show on Monday that Chapman may have been undone by an extra helping (or two, or three) of a special pastry he ate before the game. Ricardo explained that there is a special Cuban bakery nearby where he lives in...

Pastries to blame for blown save?

The Phillies beat the Reds 3-2 on Sunday in walkoff fashion after Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis hit solo homers off of Cincinnati flamethrowing closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning. The Cuban lefty's fastball velocity was slightly down (but not enough for people to get worried about an injury) during the 14-pitch outing and Phililes Spanish broadcaster Rickie Ricardo thinks he knows why...Cuban pastries. Seriously. This anecdote from CBS Philly has blown my mind. Reds surge toward top in new MLB power rankings

Cincinnati is the biggest winner in ESPN's newly released MLB Power Rankings.   Apparently, the pollsters were impressed with the six-game winning streak the Reds strung together in the past week. That streak came to an end in Philadelphia over the weekend, though, as the Reds dropped two of three from the feisty Phillies.   Nonetheless, Dusty Baker's bunch still landed at spot No. 3 this week in the rankings. That is up seven spots from the previous week, which is the highest jump for any team in baseball. Baltimore experienced the worst drop, falling nine spots from No. 4 to No. 13.   Meanwhile, the Cardinals fell off the top perch and down to No. 2. The voting panel was comprised of Tim Kurkjian, David Schoenfield, and Jayson Stark. However, former Red and Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin also voiced his opinion on air Monday, and he didn't think so highly of his former team.   Larkin excluded Cincy from his top five, choosing to...
