Pirates hang a rare loss on Latos

Mat Latos didn't so much mind his long streak ending. A pitch that plunked his teammate left a mark he won't quickly forget.

America has no faith in Mat Latos tonight

There is a poll question being posed to readers over on ESPN.com that essentially asks which pitcher they believe is more likely to suffer their first loss of the season. Respondents have the choice to choose between Boston's Clay Bucholz, Arizona's Patrick Corbin, Detroit's Max Scherzer, and Cincinnati's Mat Latos. Surprisingly, nearly half the country expects Latos to see his unblemished record come to an end first. It should be noted that Latos is the only one from that group pitching Tuesday night. Bucholz, Corbin, and Scherzer aren't scheduled to pitch again until Saturday. So, maybe the folks are just playing the odds here. If Latos can sneak past the Pirates with either a win or a no-decision Tuesday, than you have got to love his chances of proving the country wrong.

Video: Tony Cingrani sports menacing game face

Reds rookie left-hander Tony Cingrani made his first relief appearance of the season a memorable one on Monday. Cingrani entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and the Reds clinging to a narrow 2-1 lead against the Pirates. He then buckled down to record the final two outs of the inning, but not before giving viewers at home a front row seat to the one of the most intense and menacing game faces you are ever likely to see. Who wants a piece of this guy? Obviously, not the Pirates. Via Cincinnati Enquirer

Leake quietly silencing his critics

CINCINNATI The Reds led the Pirates 2-1 in the seventh inning Monday night, but Pittsburgh was threatening to even the score with a runner on second and one out. Mike Leake took care of pinch-hitter Travis Snider with a swinging strikeout for the second out. He thought he had finished off the inning with a pitch at the knees against Starling Marte. Home plate umpire Chris Conroy didnt see it that way. Catcher Devin Mesoraco went out for a quick chat and then Leake eventually got Marte on a fly ball to Shin-Soo Choo in center field to preserve the lead. The Reds won the opener of this four-game series with Pittsburgh 4-1 behind four solo home runs and the pitching of a guy who has quietly put together as good of a first half to the season as anyone in the rotation, whether anyone wants to believe it or not. Mike Leakes worst attribute has always been who or what he is not. Hes not Aroldis Chapman, who potentially was going to be the Reds No. 5 starter coming out of spring training. Hes not Tony Cingrani

Reds move Cingrani to depleted bullpen

Southpaw Tony Cingrani is here to stay. On Monday, the Reds announced plans to move the rookie to the bullpen to serve as another left-handed option in relief. Cingrani has made seven starts this season over the span of two different stints while filling in for an injured Johnny Cueto. He served as an emergency reserve on Sunday in case Cueto experienced any difficulty in his first start since coming off the disabled list. Fortunately, Cincinnati did not need him as Cueto and the Reds cruised to a 5-1 victory over Milwaukee. Cingrani said he is happy the club opted to keep him around instead of sending him back down the road to Triple-A Louisville. Even if it means pitching in a different role. โ€œAs long as Iโ€™m up here, I donโ€™t really care,โ€ Cingrani said. โ€œWhatever they want me to do, Iโ€™m happy to do it. Weโ€™ve got five good starters and if something happens, Iโ€™m ready to jump in. Iโ€™m just happy to be back here and stay up here โ€” for the time being, at least.โ€ ...

Cingrani prepared for any role with Reds

CINCINNATI It isnt just a whisper from the fans, it is more like screaming it from the roof of the 49-story Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati: Put Tony Cingrani in the rotation, put Tony Cingrani in the rotation. They do have points of contention.Since the Cincinnati Reds drafted him in the third round of the 2011 draft, Cingrani has made 45 minor-league appearances, 44 as a starter. Twice this year the 23-year-old left-hander has been a stand-in for injured Johnny Cueto for the Reds, and in seven starts he is 3-0 with a 3.15 earned run average. The last time Cueto returned Cingrani was sent back to Triple-A Louisville to continue his progress as a starting pitcher and to work on his off-speed pitches. And with no room in the rotation that is occupied by Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake, some thought Cingranis ticket to Louisville was purchased and punched.Fans, though, want to see him working in the rotation right now.Wont happen. Not for now. But Cingrani isnt going anywhere.
