Cozart’s bat skills catching up to his glovework

CINCINNATI It was a bright day under a scorching Arizona sun during a tedious spring training workout and shortstop Zack Cozart swooped to his left and speared a line drive in the webbing of his glove. And it stuck. From over at first base, Joey Votto yelled, Zaccuum Cozart, Zaccuum Cozart. And that stuck too. Zack Cozart is now Zaccuum Cozart.Yeah, Joey said that and it sort of took off, said Cozart. He said that when the ball gets in my glove it just sucks it up and stays in there. Its one of those on-going things and it is a pretty cool nickname. It is cool and it is apropos because Cozart is as at home at shortstop as the buffalo once was on the range. And what is also cool and apropos for the Reds is that Cozart, after a glacial offensive start this season, is beginning to hit four hits Wednesday in New York and he began Fridays game against the Chicago Cubs on a four-game hitting streak (7 for 21, .333 with three doubles.Cozart, a 27-year-old Tennessee native and a second-round draft pick in 2007, hit saf

Joey Votto actually could give 110%

If Joey Votto puts his mind to it, he can accomplish anything. One of my minor pet peeves is when people make a comment about devoting more than 100% to a certain task. Technically, that’s impossible. Sure, I understand what the person means: they’re devoting all of themselves to whatever it is they’re talking about. A person has 100% to give to something at any given moment. Anything more than that is not something that a person is capable of. Except for maybe Joey Votto. The more I read about him and his approach to the game of baseball, the more I think he could do anything he set his mind to, even breaking the laws of mathematics. I mean, just look at one of the finer points of Pete Rose’s that he’s taken to heart. “Early in my career, Pete kept an eye on me,” Votto said, “and the one piece of advice he gave me was, ‘When you get the second hit, get the third hit. And when you get the third hit, get the fourth hit. And when you get the fourth hit, get the fifth hit.’ That really ...

Player Profile: Mike Leake

Mike Leake became the first starting pitcher to skip the minor leagues since Jim Abbott. Or was he? Leake played in the 2009 Arizona Fall League, so technically that was his first taste of professional baseball. As an amateur, Mikey dominated college baseball during his three years at Arizona State, compiling a 40-5 record on the mound. Leake is a little guy with an assortment of pitches. He’ll mix his five pitches in an attempt to dizzy hitters into confusion. To try and get a quick out, Leake will throw a 2-seamer around 90 mph and a cutter at similar velocity. If he finds himself ahead in the count, Mike likes to break his slider on the glove side of home plate to get a swing and miss. Leake also has a changeup and curveball. The curve will blend with the slider velocity at times. Leake has had good command and control his entire pitching life, and could have himself a long career as an athletic junkballer. [2-seam fastball(87-93), cutter(87-91), slider(80-84), curve(78-81), chan...

In brief: smoldering Reds to host Cubbies

Last game The Reds completed a 3-game sweep of the Mets yesterday, winning 7-4. Mat Latos pitched for the Reds. He put in 6.2 innings and allowed 4 runs (earned) on 8 hits and a walk. In the seventh, when the Mets scored their third and fourth runs, the Reds only had 4 runs of their own, so it was looking a little dicey, but these guys battled back and tacked on 3 more in the top of the ninth. Normally, Brandon Phillips’ 2-for-4 with a walk and 2 RBI would be a pretty impressive night, but Joey Votto went 2-for-3 with 2 walks and a home run and 2 RBI. Zack Cozart went 4-for-5 with 2 RBI. This team can really turn it on sometimes. Next game The Cubs? Again?? Yes, it’s another three games with the Cubs in Cincinnati, starting tonight. Bronson Arroyo (RHP 4-4, 3.28 ERA) will take on Scott Feldman (RHP, 4-3, 2.19 ERA). First pitch at 7:10 p.m. The first geo-targeted email I’ve ever gotten from the Reds I have complained that MLB doesn’t do a very good job in segmenting it’s marketing em...

Cincinnati Bearcats baseball team rocks postgame interviews

College baseball teams sure seem to have fun, and the Cincinnati Bearcats are a good example. UC finished the regular season 24-32 and placed ninth in the Big East with a 6-18 mark, failing to qualify for the conference tournament. ... But that didn't deter the Bearcats from having a jolly good time. There was jousting. There was addressing of royalty. There was swimming. The backstroke, too. There was exploring. And to top it off, there was a capture. By the way, the UC Bearcats play their home games at Marge Schott Stadium. ... We wonder if the Cincinnati Reds late owner would approve.

Cincinnati Reds Sign RHP Trevor Bell To Minor League Deal

Free agent right-handed pitcher Trevor Bell and the Cincinnati Reds have come to terms on a minor league contract that will see him pitch for their Triple-A Louisville farm club. He was roughed up brutally in 2012 so there is no guarantee of anything other than providing organizational depth at the minor league level with this signing. Reds’ Sean Marshall unavailable with shoulder discomfort

Cincinnati Reds left-handed reliever Sean Marshall wasn't available last night against the New York Mets after he experienced discomfort in his throwing shoulder, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. The Reds ran into a situation where Marshall would have usually been called upon, as the team's right-handed starter, Mat Latos, reached 100 pitches and was set to face left-handed batter Daniel Murphy. After surrendering a RBI single to Murphy, Latos then allowed the tying run to score on a hit from another lefty, Rick Ankiel. Following the game, manager Dusty Baker told reporters that he would have generally used Marshall in that situation. However, the left-hander wasn't available after his arm didn't respond well to pregame throwing. For his part, Marshall believes he's dealing with inflammation. "We were kind of erring on the side of caution. I told them I was a little bit sore," Marshall said after the Reds' 7-4 win. "I did a...

Reds 7, Mets 4

Brandon Phillips bounced a bizarre double over first base to snap a ninth-inning tie, and the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the struggling New York Mets with a 7-4 victory Wednesday. Joey Votto homered and Zack Cozart had a career-high four hits, all off Matt Harvey, in a game that featured a little bit of everything - including a testy exchange in the dugout between Cincinnati starter Mat Latos and teammate Jay Bruce. Still, the Reds regrouped and won for the 10th time in 12 games. They finished a 7-2 trip against the bottom three teams in the NL East, moving a season-best 11 games over .500 at 29-18. Harvey appeared headed for his first defeat of the season before the Mets rallied in the seventh. But they fell to 2-11 in their last 13 home games. Daniel Murphy had three hits and two RBIs in the leadoff spot for New York. Rick Ankiel added three extra-base hits and drove in two runs, including a tying triple with two outs in the seventh. With the score tied at 4 in the ninth, Shin-Soo
