Reds rookie left-hander Tony Cingrani made his first relief appearance of the season a memorable one on Monday.
Cingrani entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out and the Reds clinging to a narrow 2-1 lead against the Pirates.
He then buckled down to record the final two outs of the inning, but not before giving viewers at home a front row seat to the one of the most intense and menacing game faces you are ever likely to see.
Who wants a piece of this guy? Obviously, not the Pirates.

Maybe it's just natural maturity but Mike Leake has taken a profound leap with his performance this season.

CINCINNATI The Reds led the Pirates 2-1 in the seventh inning Monday night, but Pittsburgh was threatening to even the score with a runner on second and one out. Mike Leake took care of pinch-hitter Travis Snider with a swinging strikeout for the second out. He thought he had finished off the inning with a pitch at the knees against Starling Marte.
Home plate umpire Chris Conroy didnt see it that way.
Catcher Devin Mesoraco went out for a quick chat and then Leake eventually got Marte on a fly ball to Shin-Soo Choo in center field to preserve the lead.
The Reds won the opener of this four-game series with Pittsburgh 4-1 behind four solo home runs and the pitching of a guy who has quietly put together as good of a first half to the season as anyone in the rotation, whether anyone wants to believe it or not.
Mike Leakes worst attribute has always been who or what he is not. Hes not Aroldis Chapman, who potentially was going to be the Reds No. 5 starter coming out of spring training. Hes not Tony Cingrani

Southpaw Tony Cingrani is here to stay.
On Monday, the Reds announced plans to move the rookie to the bullpen to serve as another left-handed option in relief. Cingrani has made seven starts this season over the span of two different stints while filling in for an injured Johnny Cueto. He served as an emergency reserve on Sunday in case Cueto experienced any difficulty in his first start since coming off the disabled list. Fortunately, Cincinnati did not need him as Cueto and the Reds cruised to a 5-1 victory over Milwaukee.
Cingrani said he is happy the club opted to keep him around instead of sending him back down the road to Triple-A Louisville. Even if it means pitching in a different role.
โAs long as Iโm up here, I donโt really care,โ Cingrani said. โWhatever they want me to do, Iโm happy to do it. Weโve got five good starters and if something happens, Iโm ready to jump in. Iโm just happy to be back here and stay up here โ for the time being, at least.โ

CINCINNATI It isnt just a whisper from the fans, it is more like screaming it from the roof of the 49-story Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati: Put Tony Cingrani in the rotation, put Tony Cingrani in the rotation.
They do have points of contention.Since the Cincinnati Reds drafted him in the third round of the 2011 draft, Cingrani has made 45 minor-league appearances, 44 as a starter. Twice this year the 23-year-old left-hander has been a stand-in for injured Johnny Cueto for the Reds, and in seven starts he is 3-0 with a 3.15 earned run average.
The last time Cueto returned Cingrani was sent back to Triple-A Louisville to continue his progress as a starting pitcher and to work on his off-speed pitches. And with no room in the rotation that is occupied by Cueto, Mat Latos, Bronson Arroyo, Homer Bailey and Mike Leake, some thought Cingranis ticket to Louisville was purchased and punched.Fans, though, want to see him working in the rotation right now.Wont happen. Not for now. But Cingrani isnt going anywhere.

The Cincinnati Reds have activated right-handed starter Johnny Cueto from the 15-day disabled list as he had been recovering from a strained lat injury.
The young Cueto has a low 2.17 ERA this season, but has been suffering from health issues all season long.
To make room for Cueto, Pedro Villarreal was optioned to Triple-A Louisville and returns to their rotation. Villarreal remains pitching depth for the organization.

I am someone who likes to cater to what the people are talking about. I ask around, search the web and see whatโs getting people really riled up in the news of baseball, and more recently, in the news of the Cincinnati Reds.
Last week, we saw the Reds almost perfect the four-game sweep against the Cubs. However, in the marathon of a game, the Reds lost in Wrigley in a 6-5, after Julio Borbon cleaned up with a walk-off RBI.ย In that game, we didnโt see the 100 MPH fastball of Aroldis Chapman.
Yes, itโs going to be a Dusty Baker/Aroldis Chapman piece.
With toothpick in mouth, Baker said he wonโt use Chapman before the ninth inning. A wise decision?
Message boards and interactions I ran into with Reds fans last week went a lot along the lines of โWhat the heck are you doing Dusty? Put Chapman in to save the game.โ Or, one that really caught my eye was, โWe need to send Dusty home, with a lifetime supply of toothpicks, and find someone who will give Chapman more than an inning every couple games.โ
